A FIELD GUIDE TO LARAVEL · VOLUME II · THE ECOSYSTEM
ENTRY II.2 · LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
Homestead
Laravel\Homestead · Package · first recorded 17 November 2014, v2.0.0 of the CLI on Packagist; the Vagrant box predates it
A pre-packaged Vagrant box: Ubuntu with Nginx, PHP, MySQL, Postgres, Redis and Node, so no PHP or server software went on the laptop. Its role has passed to Sail for containers and Herd for a native setup.
Specification
Kind Virtual machine, a Vagrant box. Legacy, no longer actively maintained
Interface Homestead.yaml: provider, folders, sites, services, features
Runs on VirtualBox 6.1 or Parallels, on macOS, Windows or Linux
Installed by git clone laravel/homestead · bash init.sh · vagrant up
Voice none. vagrant up · vagrant ssh · vagrant reload --provision
Scales by Many sites on one box; or one box per project via Composer
Range Cloud: n/a: local only. Cloud builds its own container
Forge, VPS: n/a: local only. Forge provisions the real Ubuntu
Vapor: n/a: local only. Nothing of it reaches Lambda
Neighbours
Sail is where the Homestead page now points: the same idea on Docker, a container per service. Herd and Valet install PHP natively, with no virtual machine at all. Homestead's distinction was one whole Ubuntu machine you could ssh into, closer to a server than either.

Parts
1 Homestead.yaml. One file declares the provider, the shared folders, the sites, which services run, and optional features.
2 Shared folders. ~/code/project1 on the host is mounted at /home/vagrant/project1 inside the box and kept in sync.
3 Sites. Each map: homestead.test becomes an Nginx server block pointing at a project's public/ directory.
4 The box, Ubuntu 22.04 with PHP 5.6 to 8.3 side by side, MySQL, Postgres, Redis, Memcached, Node and Mailpit.
5 Ports. Host 8000 forwards to 80, 44300 to 443, 33060 to MySQL, 54320 to Postgres; the app inside sees the defaults.
6 Settler. The scripts that build the base box, in a second repository; Homestead is the Vagrant wrapper around it.
Hidden joinery
The GitHub repository was archived on 5 June 2025; the docs call it no longer actively maintained. Apple silicon needs Parallels, not VirtualBox. backup: true dumps MySQL and Postgres on vagrant destroy. A schedule: true site gets a cron entry for schedule:run. Xdebug is on by default and slows PHP until turned off.
